Barbados, Barbados 3

I previously gave a review, but I have decided to change it as I have recently visited. I feel that for me, Barbados has changed. The white tourists have begun to take over, and the island is definitely taking on a more tourist-oriented atmosphere. The cost-of-living is starting to rise, and new high-rise hotels are going up like nobody's business! Service here is terrible. Horrible! I went to buy a camera and the salesman refused to help me or show me a camera. The waitresses are horrible and apathetic. A lot of the help in stores and businesses will treat you like an idiot or a child. Usually, I am nice and understanding to help, but in Barbados I had to get embarassingly nasty, almost exactly like you have to do in New York City. Some people don't get it until you shout. I've worked retail in bargain stores too, and I've found the level of service in even expensive department stores to be embarassingly amateur. Anyway, this is an great island for those that have money. Unfortunately for me, the island I was born on has become to expensive and too strange. I didn't know many people here as a lot have moved to North America. If the service improved here, Barbados would definitely get five stars from me. Oh yeah, I forgot, there are a lot of insane people loose on the streets here. Keep an eye out for some interesting characters, many of whom talk to themselves walking down the road!

In response to samjung. I personally think your statement that white tourists have begun to take over should be rephrased but anyways... Yes Barbados Tourism is going through a developing stage. But this is due to the fact that tourists are visiting the island and loving there stay here. That leads to expansion and increased standards of living for any country. It is in the hands of the government, Barbados Tourism Board and the people of the island to maintain the island's personality and authenticity. With regards to the hospitality in the service industry I agree with you and have always thought it can be greatly improved. I believe it is in the hands of the owners of stores, restaurants and hotels to ensure that a certain level of hospitality and politeness is maintained. As well as in the hands of the customers and visitors that experience this to report it and complain in order to encourage change. However this is definitely not representitve of the majority of Barbadians. Definitely not. I can also listed tons of restaurants such as Champers and The Restaurant At Southsea where service is impeccable..from amazing waiter's and waitress to amazing hosts and hostess. And the reason why is cause of great management. Your comment about insane people in the streets is an exaggeration.
