A strong contender for the title of the greatest British Middle Distance racehorse of the last Century. No colt displayed such superiority over his 3 year old contemporaries and his 10 length 1981 Epsom Derby win was the greatest performance in the race in terms of winning distance.Shergar however faced comparitively weaker oposition to the other champions like Dancing Brave and Mill Reef and faded out in Autumn ,crashing to defeat in the St.Leger.In the Epsom Derby runner-Up Glint of Gold was bumped into by Kalaglow. However at Epsom that day Shergar could have gone on to win by 15 lengths. When pitted against older horses Shergar won in convincing fashion like a true champion in the King George but his manner of victory was not on par with Mill Reef ,Nijinsky or Dancing Brave.(In the 1986 Arc)Overall to me Mill Reef,Nijinsky and Dancing Brave were marginally superior. That does not deny that in 1981 Shergar was a superhorse. His kidnapping was the saddest event in post-war horse-racing.
