Signing of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 4

This initiative is just about the only thing that I've agreed with the Bush Administration on (with the possible exception of taking out the Taliban.) It makes sense to me in theory. If schools don't deliver a quality education (as measured by standardized tests), they risk losing students. I don't claim to be an expert in education, but it seems like a step in the right direction.

You know it is quite easy for politicians to point fingers at teachers and schools for their problems. I mean, it sure doesn't make sense politically to point the finger at parents for a failing public school system. Let's face it, teachers make easy targets. Something else to consider...how is testing alone going to create quality instruction? Money spent on standardized testing without funds going to professional development and support for schools and teachers to improve instruction makes absolutely no sense. NCLB is a tremendously flawed project that needs a major overhaul. Let me put it in layman terms. Let's say you are a football coach (teacher). As a team owner (NCLB), I expect you to make improvements and win more games each year than you did previously until finally in the year 2014, you will win ALL your games. Of course, each year you will get an entirely different team (group of students to teach). If you don't, we will penalize your team with less recruits, sanctions against your programs, and reduce your funds. The goals of NCLB are unobtainable. There is no way you will ever get 100% compliance that EVERY CHILD will be on level by the third grade. There are too many factors (i.e. child's home environment, lack of parental support, child's IQ) that figure into it.
