Intravenous fluids definitely help with the effects of alcohol poisoning. Rehydration is key for preventing the head-pounding headache, and an I.V. replenishes your system faster than just water. But unless the person truly needs a hospital visit, it makes more sense to rehydrate with a sports drink or several glasses of water than having a vein jabbed open. You never want to trust an amateur to do this extreme method, since the procedure can be unpleasant enough as it is.
