Gays have been serving in other armies with NO distracting consequences whatsoever. In fact, the British Army has just signalled that gay couples in service will now be able to live together in barracks houses, just as married couples do. The Army has indeed come a long way. And since gay 'marriage' will be legal in the UK after the 21st Dec 2005, the Army has delivered right on time.
