The beauty of our system is that it transcends any one man. Checks and balances usually prevent egregious abuses on the part of the government. Of course our government was founded on a set of liberal ideals. George Washington personified such an approach, rather than become a permanent regent, he decided to give up the Presidency after 2 terms. He knew that any imperial pretentions would doom the young nation. He knew that the cult of personality had a corrosive effect on our institutions and he decided to subserviate his ego for the greater good. That said, I don't think Kerry could possibly do so much damage. Even if he's elected, there's little room for damage. By the looks of it, I foresee that Kerry will run a reasonably competent administration--certainly none of us will agree with his agenda, but he's not someone who will destroy our government.
