Racism 5

For the past six weeks I've been doing my MA and I'm one of two blacks in my year of thirty-six students. I used to work and coming from an environment where race was not an issue and to be thrown into one where it is, is extremely overwhelming. Since I've been there I've learnt that racism still exists in its extreme forms and it angers me that teachers are still judging my ability due to the colour of my skin rather than academic achievement. I laugh in the face of adversity and I know as well as they do that I'm going to persevere above their narrow minds and have a more positive influence in this world by continuing to rise and stay true to myself and others.

Bird: Keep on keepin' on! You WILL get it done. I came from a family that was dirt poor...parents had an 8th and 7th grade education between them...blue collar, hard workers. I didn't even find out that people like me could go to college until I was 17. The elitism barrier was great (and, believe me, as a guy who is 1/2 Italian and 1/2 Irish...I heard more than my share of "Mick" and Dago/WOP" remarks), but I kicked ass and beat it. Four degrees and four professional licenses later, the words of those people seem very far away. The problem is, now that I've got the degrees, etc., I am wondering what the big deal was.
