Born in 1917, John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. During the Kennedy Administration, the nation was at the height of the Cold War, with significant crises unfolding in Cuba, Vietnam and Berlin. Kennedy also had to face growing civil unrest here at home. Just 1,000 days into his term, Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963 in Dallas, TX.

The last great Democratic president, he inspired a generation with what I consider the greatest inaugural address in history. Somewhere along the way people turned Ask not what your country can do for you, as what you can do for your country into Ask not what I can do for my country, ask what my government can provide for me.
