Black Panther salute in Mexico City (1968)

At the medal ceremony for the 200m sprint, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos (first and third place) raised their fists in a “Black Panther” salute in protest to racism in America.

While no one was physically hurt or gained a competitive edge from the Black Panther Salute, the problem with this was the fact that the act injected politics into an event that was designed to be non-political. This relatively small gesture seemed to raise the bar yet again only four years removed from the subsequent events in Munich. While obviously tame by contemporary standards, this is how things get changed from how they were intended to be.
