When Duran Duran were shooting music videos in Thailand and singing about a lady called Rio who dances in the sand, Morrissey was penning lines like I need advice, I need advice, nobody ever looks at me twice. And that spoke to pale teenagers who could not really picture dancing in the sand with anyone (more like getting sand kicked in their faces). This was straight from the anguished heart with no frills. The Smiths filled a gap left by vacuous pop music in the early eighties. And they had an enormous influence on indie music.
