The issue pre-dates George Bush. Conservatives believe in a laissez-faire attitude toward business, which means that businesses should be able to conduct their commerce with a minimum of government interference and regulation. When businesses become abusive or irresponsible, the court system becomes the regulator of behavior. It's difficult to argue today that businesses are not over-regulated (Income Tax, OSHA, Workman's Comp, Affirmative Action, MBE's, WBE's, etc. ) but it is easy to say that while the burden of government intrusion is substantial and very expensive, the American taxpayer (as well as business owners) are not efficiently served. The waste that occurs, particularly at the federal level of government, is enormous and corruption and irresponsible behavior goes on with mind-numbing consistency. If we're going fund this level of regulation, it certainly should be on a more de-centralized level (state & local) where the taxpayers, theoretically, can keep a closer eye on how their tax dollars are spent and what return is yielded. A federal bureaucracy is the hardest to evaluate objectively and is absolutely impoosible to terminate. It just gets bigger and stronger every year.
