I don't know anybody that said you had to be a Christian to be an American, the point is there is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits state sponsered religions. Notice I did not say anything about Christian religions, just religion. There is also nothing in the Constitution that says all images or references to any kind of religion or ideology should be wiped from public view. It's freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion.
