Born in 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky and raised in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. Shortly thereafter, several southern states seceded from the Union and formed the the Confederate States of America. The Civil War had begun. Lincoln was re-elected in 1864, and was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth in April 1865 just days after the surrender of the Confederacy.
