Nothing stuck to Carter like this tar. Every challenger has tried to ply this on every incumbent since, but nobody could deliver the line like Reagan. With a prime rate of 18%, unemployment creeping toward 9%, inflation at nearly 12%, the 79 (I think) hostages' year old captivity by terrorists in Iran hanging over the campaign, this had the impact of a bayonnet thrust on Carter.
