Hey now GA, don't be hatin' on folks from Arkansas. Actually I can't say that because my wife recently had a similar experience one of her classes she's taking for her degree in Early Childhood Ed. The class was math for teacher and the professor had been telling the students for weeks that they needed to have a protractor and compass in class on a certain day because they were going to draw angles and circles and the like. The day arrived and the professor had been teaching for several minutes with her giant compass that held chalk so she could easily demonstrate how to use one on the board when a student next to my wife raised her hand and asked for assistance using the compass she had brought which was a magnetic directional compass. I guess directions like that are needed for some people.
