Irishgit has stated that Steve Garvey's career was not one that merits automatic inclusion into Cooperstown. At this time I will reserve comment on that subject for a later date, and only note that our fellow RIA member will have to make his explanations to St. Peter as to why he would choose to utter such blasphemy during his time on Earth.
On a more serious note, he also stated that revelations about Big 6's "extracurricular activities" that have come to light since he retired have probably not helped him with the sportswriters. I think James Worthy suffered the same problem. I am referring to the incident wherein he missed the first half of a game because he got picked up by the cops for soliciting "favors" from two call girls at the hotel where the Lakers were staying on a road trip.
Quite frankly, there are few other explanations I can imagine. Some might argue (the eternally damned) that Garvey's career was not first ballot material. But 3 NBA championships, an NCAA championship, selection as the College Player of the Year, inclusion among the NBA's 50th anniversary team, and numerous huge, clutch performances in the postseason is. Just about the only thing Big Game James didn't do was win an Olympic medal.
