Current Incumbent, Democrat John Baldacci is expected to run for re-election. His current approval rating is 40%. Republican challengers are: Brian Hamel, Kevin Hancock, State Sen. Peter Mills, Stephen Stimpson and State Sen. Chandler Woodcock.

Although Mainers occasionally like to elect Independents and moderate Republicans (like their two current senators, Snowe and Collins) this is now a pretty solidly Democratic state. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Baldacci's approval numbers aren't all that impressive but it's hard to envision any Republican who could defeat him.
