Actually, NMiller's post is partially inaccurate. Neither Pelosi, nor Kucinich, nor any member of the Progressive Caucus except Rep Major Owens is a member. Ron Dellums was a member. Bernie Sanders and DSA don't get along, and he's the only other self-identified socialist in congress. DSA helped organize Progressive Caucus, but DSA membership is not a criterion.
DSA was part of a three way split from the Socialist Party after Norman Thomas' death. The SP continues to operate as a third party, while DSA and SDUSA (in many ways a conservative organization believe it or not) operate within the two major parties. DSA works exclusively with the Democrats while SDUSA actually endorsed Nixon over McGovern.
