John F. Kennedy

ItemImage

(1917-1963) 35th President of the United States. While campaigning for President in 1960, Kennedy had criticized the Eisenhower Administration for not taking an active role in the quest for Civil Rights. Despite this, once in office, Kennedy expressed some reluctance. He did express an active concern with racial violence in Alabama and Mississippi. In 1963, Kennedy proposed sweeping Civil Rights legislation that was still pending in the Congress when he was shot and killed on November 22, 1963.

Drummond

He was okay. Did have his brother stand up to Wallace. But his compromises lent him the lowest portion of the black vote of any Dem candidate since before FDR, netting only about 65% as I remember. Considering that Johnson took something like 98% and Democrats now routinely take about 90%, civil rights obviously wasn't JFK's strong point.
