This was always a tradition in my family. At the time I remember going mainly so I would not have to go to mass in the morning. Plus the Midnight mass was very moving, the slow, sadder Christmas songs would be sung, Silent Night etc.. You also got to see people you have not seen for awhile, college kids, with new boy or girlfriends.
