I'm sure someone out there will correct my "facts", but if memory serves me correctly, not too many years back (no more than 20), the Congress actually passed a law calling for the US to adopt the metric system. Well, we can all see how heartily and seriously we embraced that proposal. I do think that it would be beneficial for us to get on the metric bandwagon. Maybe we could work a deal with the Britsh whereby they would change over from driving on the left to the right, and we'd switch from feet/inches/pounds to meters and kilos (if anyone thinks I'm serious about that, they had too much to drink over the holidays and are still suffering the residual effects).
