Hector

ItemImage

Hector, the greatest Trojan warrior, was the eldest child of King Priam and Queen Hecabe, crown prince of Troy, and seemingly a pious and humble man. Naturally, Hector became the leader of the alliance defending Troy. In the waning years of the war Hector was killed by Achilles, revenging the death of Patroclus.

I first read Pope's Iliad over fifty years ago, when I was in school, and I have read other translations since. I must say that I really have deep feelings for Hector. I have a hard time explaining the sympathetic emotions that I feel for Hector. He is the most noble and favorable character that Homer describes. His death still brings tears to my eye when I read of it. Now I know this sounds wimpy and weak, but such nobilty falling to the scoundrel, Achilles, is just too much!

By the way, the Iliad ends at Hector's death.
