Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) (King of Macedonia)

I have to give him 5 stars for putting his body where his ambitions went.He fought alongside his front men,and suffered many of the same deprivations his troops suffered.(Although his quarters were much more lavish,he still went hungry when they did-and most importantly exposed himself to the danger he subjected his troops to).He was also known for treating his captives more humanely than most of his contemporaries.(One of his arch enemies was shocked when he found that his wife and mother had been treated very respectfully after being captured). He was beloved by his troops and known to visit the sick and injured men, whom he knew by name. What a big difference from the more historically recent "leaders" who stay half a world away from the danger and suffering of their armed forces!
