Well I'm not buying the Devil's influence, necessarily, but ol' Jerry is right. Religion is a form of moral action. Secularism is just the mirror image of religion, and nobody argues against secularism and politics mixing. It is perfectly proper, logically, for religion and politics to mix. The prohibition comes against establishement of religon. Why shouldn't a person determine his political stance by his religion or lack of, for that matter?
