It's hard to think of any branch of scientific research where more money has been invested for less benefit than nuclear fusion. Electric power from nuclear fusion reactors was 'just around the corner' 25 years ago, and will likely be 'just around the corner' in 2031. 'Cold' fusion was the greatest scientific hoax of the 20th century, and remains the most promising candidate for greatest hoax of the 21st (hydrogen a close second).
