There was a recent story about a prototype power station in Australia that produces relatively cheap electricity (bonus: desalinated water too)from tidal power. The key breakthrough is advanced software that enables the turbines to continually adjust to the tides and maximize power output. It's too early to tell, but this is one of the more promising future energy sources (gravity isn't running out, and the moon isn't going anywhere soon).
