The Bible says that "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female" 5

UPDATE 4: Autzen, not sure exactly what you are saying but yes sin is sin and one does not justify the other. As Christians we must do everything possible with God's help to try to stop sinning and not condone it.
UPDATE 3: It is amazing to me that people who do believe in the Bible choose to ignore it when it suits them. You can't say God says this but I personally believe this unless you just reject God. UPDATE 2: It is amazing to me just how many people on RIA do not believe in the Word of GOD (the Bible). It is also equally amazing to me how many people do not believe in God. UPDATE: edt4, the points you brought up have nothing to do with trying to justify anything, especially some ones idea of who is or is not prejudice. This issue deals with a lifestyle and choices. You may say it does not, but I believe it is a form of perversion; many compare it to other sexual perversions. Also in case you are wondering Christians or "religious people" do not hate them. Some things you talk about were before the time of Christ and things did change as you know after his death. Some things you mentioned were customs of the day. The last item about the rich man is true as the eye of a needle is talking about an entrance the camel had a hard time passing through. If a man loves money more than anything else then it would be hard for him to make it into heaven because of his greed. ORIGINAL MESSAGE: "If a man lies with a man as he lies with a woman, the two commit an abomination before the Lord." If God says it is wrong who am I to argue? Separation of church and state does not apply here. The intent was to keep government out of the church, not to keep the church out of government!

Donovan, I think you're confusing the legality with your religion. You don't want gay couples in your church? Fine, boot them out. You don't want gay couples to have the same legal rights as you? That's more problematic. Equal protection under the law is a big deal in the US, and I think that's why your religious arguments aren't that convincing to those that don't already share them. The only ethical argument against legalizing gay marriage is the one raised by EO - give them the exact same legal protection through civil unions, but don't call them "marriages" because that word has a different definition. Adoption of any other argument for legal purposes (slippery slope, Bible, grossness), IMHO, is flat out discriminatory, unethical, and un American.

The topic for discussion here is: The Bible says that "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female." Your statement "The only ethical argument against legalizing gay marriage is the one raised by EO - give them the exact same legal protection through civil unions" is your opinion which I can not agree with as I view our legal system founded on values that you do not.

Gays already have equal protection under the law. Donovan is correct.

Victor, gay partners don't have hospital visitation rights. How is that equal protection under the law?

Victor83 commented 1003 days ago.
If one of my best friends were in the hospital, would I have that visitation right? NO. If the rights of heterosexual and homosexual individuals are the same...that is, obviously, equal.

I'm sorry if you list your next of kin as your gay partner he or she can be present for legal visitation!!! Your next of kin can be anyone!!!!!!!

In real life, when it all comes down to it, recognition of "next of kin" comes down to who the hospital and/or physician accepts as your next of kin. Some are very authoritarian; some are very liberal. Even so-called "living wills" don't always hold sway in a hospital setting. I know all about what people say about "next of kin," but, to quote SSgt. Barnes in "Platoon," "There's the way it oughta be and there's the way it is!" Like I have said in another thread, I am neither pro-gay nor anti-gay, I just know how things come down in the real world. "Partners" are generally not accepted as next of kin in most hospital settings, except when there is a VERY progressive physician attending. I don't happen to swing the gay way. In fact, what they do is abhorrant to me...well, not really abhorrent, but I just can't figure out how everything works out, if you know what I mean. But, that is me, not them. Frankly, I have enough to worry about the sin in my own life to worry about the "sin" in the lives of others. This is NOT a theocracy, it is a Democratic Republic. May God help us when and if we do ever become a theocracy.

Victor, we're not talking about best friends, we're talking about partners. It's OK to be against gay marriage - you're entitled to your opinion. But you should be honest about what the ramifications are. Specifically, by taking this position, you are saying that you don't want gay couples to have the same legal rights that you and your wife have. It is what it is, and please don't try and trick us with this "funded by the taxpayer" and "best friends" stuff.

Victor83 commented 1003 days ago.
"trick" you? Magellan...sad...when you feel like your argument is on shaky ground, you resort to an attempt to make me look bad in front of all the other kids. Very bad playground manners.
