Of the first three installments of the "Myst" series (the only ones that I've played), "Riven" (the second) is the strongest. The game is more complex (five disks at the time of release (1997)) than its series predecessor, the worlds are detailed and engaging (as expected from the "Myst" series), the puzzles are complex and lengthy, the play is more non-linear than "Myst" (and much more than "Exile"), and the replay value is surprisingly good for a game of this type. The bottom line is that "Exile" (along with the original "Myst") is a "must play" for anyone interested in the adventure video game genre.
