Othello 4

For a game that has such basic rules yet still has a relatively high level of strategy and skill, it's had to ignore Othello. As RIA has yet to include a description, most now probably know this game by its original incarnation, Reversi, and it was a popular computer program that played on early versions of Windows. Players alternately place their black/white chips down to bookend the opposing colors, resulting in those middle chips flipping to the player's color. The player with the most colored ships showing at the end wins. The game was ultimately renamed Othello (obviously after the Shakespearean play) by the Japanese and became popular in the mid 1970's. Like Chess, this game has no chance factor, but it differs in that the strategies are less complex (e.g. corner pieces).

No chance factor? You must not be that experienced a player. First of all this game was invented by Goro Hasegawa a slight variation of the reversi game. The old reversi rules exsist, but not online. Those reversi rules are now Hasagawa's Othello rules, but to avoid Anjar's ownership of "othello" they call it reversi. Now, the reversi game and othello game appear to be one in the same. Same rules. The corner, although it be a position of control, does not mean you win. Check out the bottom Othello applet I have on my main page for a prime example of it. I gave away both corners because of parity, and then proceeded to win the game.
