As the other comments have noted, Beatrice Arthur's biggest problem in the looks department is her clearly masculine features, which aren't helped by her relatively deep voice. She usually looks like a bad sex change operation. Even the name Maude (her title character from her 70's television show for those who don't know) sounds masculine, which I'm sure was the point.
