Iams 2

I am or was new to owning a pet on my own. I am a college student, and my brother had to go off to grad school where he couldnt have pets so I took his dog (a springer spaniel) for him. He had fed the dog many foods apparently including Iams. In the transitioning process to going to grad school he was short on money and started feeding his dog kibbles and bits. He had no knowledge of pet food whatsoever, and neither did I taking on the dog. Feeding him kibbles and bits, the dog gradually started getting skin and coat problems, and I took him into the vet. The vet gave him suppliments and handed me a flyer to look for dog food with. I made a compromise for Iams since I am on a college budget. The dog got a little better for awhile, but then developed ear infections, and now has a very bad skin problem in which he is constantly scratching and bitting at his paws. I did extensive research on different foods and today switched to Innova EVO. I will gradually make the change to make it easier on him. I might should have tried regular Innova first, which has less protein, but I will see how this works. Bottom line: Iams is probably better than Kibbles and Bits, but definently not good overall.

We have a springer spaniel also who for the last 3-1/2 years (she's 5 now) has been miserable with allergies. She's had eye, mouth, ear, skin, toe infections one after another usually 2 to 3 at a time. Our vet put her on Iams 3-1/2 years ago. She's been on 2 x weekly allergy shots for 3-1/2 years. For the last 2 yeas she had most of her chest & tail hair completely gone, would itch in the night or when we where not around to yell at her until she was bleeding. Not to mention several thousand dollars in vet bills over the last 3-1/2 years. Our vet took her off of Iams last Nov - put her on Science Diet Z/D (the allergy formula). She improved a little. 4 weeks ago with the food scare I took her (Our vet doesn't know yet) off of science diet and put her on Blue Buffalo Food (all natural & high ratings & cheaper than Science Diet!) and starting making her biscuits out of flour & bacon bits etc. Yesterday marked 2-weeks she's been completely off her allergy shots, eating blue & homemade biscuits & people food etc.! NO itching & she's bouncing off the walls with energy - bright eyes, she's gained weight, is awake & alert & LOVES her Blue & she's growing springer "feathers" for the first time ever! We was like you trying everything out of the grocery store - no more - bouy have we learned ALOT in the last few weeks and Kalee is the one who is no longer suffering. Thanks for your story everytime we here one like ours we're even more sure we made the right decision!
