The Bible says that "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female" 4

It also says you are not to eat pig meat/shell fish etc. Why does anyone care who marries or sleeps with who?

It also says that one should not wear a shirt made of two different cloths...so much for perma-prest 60/40 shirts.

Nothing like someone taking something out of context! Congratulations!

Donovan: Where is what he said out of context? That is exactly the way it is written.

"It also says you are not to eat pig meat/shell fish etc." Where exactly does it say that? Nice lack of citation to convince yourself.

secondeye: If you were really a Bible scholar, and not a ghost troll, you would know where it was from. I'll give you a hint: Try the Pentateuch.

You have to read the Bible as it was intended, not pick out verses to suit your needs. It also says "The fool says in his heart,There is no God."

Donovan, can you explain why it's out of context? This is one thing I've never understood (and I'm really not trying to be a jerk about it)

Dear Bible Scholars...Leviticus 11:7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. Now what the hell does that mean? As for out of context, you bible thumpers live and die by that!

I will try, the context in Romans 14 is in the eating of meat by Gentiles that had been sacrificed to idols. It was a common practice for the meat that was offered to idols in pagan temples to be sold to the public in meat markets. The pagan temples ran meat markets selling the meat that had been offered in sacrifice to the idol of that particular temple. Therefore much of the meat available came from the butcher shops of the pagan temples; there are verses in the Bible where it tells us if it offends your brother to eat meat then don't eat meat around them. This keeps them from stumbling.

Donovan, thanks for responding but I guess I still don't get it. There's a lot of stuff in the Bible, right? Much of it is straightforward and serves, in many ways, for the foundation of our legal code. Some of it, however, like the different cloth stuff and the shellfish stuff, is no longer considered critical to living a good life. So who decides what is the Word of God and what is some quaint, outdated stuff that just doesn't apply any more?

I believe personally that we are no longer under the law, an example of this is Leviticus 11:7. There are over 600 Jewish laws in the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament. We are now part of the New Testament Church. Yes, this does not mean that the Old Testament is no longer useful, because it is. It shows the works of God and the promises that have been and will be fulfilled. Many parts are still valid, but we are living in the days following Christ on earth. Somethings in the Old Testament I believe are there for our health benefit such as the eating of pork. Things even in the New Testament must be taken in context; for example the book of Corinthians is actually a letter to a church, the Corinthian Church. It applies to you if you are doing what they were doing. ie: Women be silent as they were causing problems in that church.
