Pete Sampras 4

As the career of federer progresses, one has to wonder if he will one day be the consensus "best ever" on the men's side. As of now, I don't see how anyone could disagree that Borg is the best of the open era. That said, I would say that Federer and Sampras are in a tie for second place all-time. He was a truly great player.

Update: With Federer on the scene now, Pete is not even the second best anymore.

Federer has almost no competition. If it wasn't for Nadal there would be no talent in the top ten besides Roger. The top ten is really bad....Sampras had everyone from Agassi to Rafter gunning for him...Sampras dominated the best group of players in history...

The field of competition now is Federer and Nadal for the most part- on that we agree. But Sampras did not even come close to the field of competition that was Borg, McEnroe, Connors, etc.

I might add that Borg is consistently criticized for his failure to win a US Open. Sampras never won a French. Borg did prove his proficiency on the hard court- making it to the chamionship 4 times. Sampras never made it to a FO final.
