Dwight David Eisenhower (1953-1961)

ItemImage

Born in 1890 in Denison, Texas, Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected president in 1952 following a long record of service in the U.S. Armed Forces. As President, "Ike" faced the new challenges of the post-war era, including the emerging Cold War and the conflict in Korea. In domestic affairs, Eisenhower expanded the New Deal programs while emphasizing fiscal restraint. He also initiated the construction of the interstate highway system. Ike retired from the Presidency in 1961, and died in 1969.

Ike was a true conservative and a stand-up individual. Many people see the period 1953-1960 as a time of peace and innocence. In some ways that is true; but the world situation was a boiling caldron at the time...height of the cold war, wars in Africa and southeast Asia, and much of the population of Central and South America caught in crossfires between left and right wing dictators. If FDR could be called the last true leader of the old world, Ike was the first leader of the new.
