I would have to disagree with ajowoods. Everyone has their own personal tastes in music. I would agree that Townshend (solo) is less deserving than McCartney (solo) or Clapton (solo), but I would put Townshend's solo catalog up against lots of inductees, such as: Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash, the Moonglows, the Ronettes, the Sex Pistols, Buddy Guy, Percy Sledge, The Dells, Brenda Lee, Isaac Hayes, Gene Pitney, Ritchie Valens, The Flamingos, Lovin' Spoonful --- I'm not saying these inductees don't deserve to be in -- just that Townshend's solo material was way more inventive, creative and inpirational.

I live in Chicago where WXRT actually plays more Townshend solo stuff than The Who. I realize WXRT is a unique station (kind of like college radio for adults). One thing I know for certain is Townshend solo material appeals to women a lot more than men - it's more melodic and moody - not as hard rock as The Who. If you think about the artists that went in the Hall as a band and then solo (McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, Clapton, Paul Simon) the one common denominator is that people would pay to see them perform alone on stage with nothing but a guitar and a mike, and I think Townshend falls into that category. Read some of the other Rateitall reviews - obviously, people feel pretty passionate about Townshend as writer and musician. I would still rather see him in than 95% of the other groups on the list.

I should have been more clear. I'm not saying that Townshend's solo work was bad - I like it very much, along with the other Who songs. What I am saying is that, compared to his work with the Who (which you have to do, since his work with the band does not count towards his solo work), his solo work is insignificant. It may be way more inventive, creative, and inspirational, but the Rock Hall voters and impartial critics won't agree. I do like Townshend a lot, but I am trying to be impartial here, and if you can get around your own opinion you can see that Townshend is just not qualified for the Hall. It seems that most people are not, but that is why I am trying to do so.
