Solar Energy

ItemImage

"Solar energy technologies use sunlight to produce heat and electricity. Electricity produced by solar energy through photovoltaic technologies can be used in conventional electric vehicles. Using solar energy directly to power vehicles has been investigated primarily for competition and demonstration vehicles. Solar vehicles are not available to the general public, and are not currently being considered by OEMs for production. However, solar vehicles have been developed and used in several competitions including the American Solar Challenge and the World Solar Challenge." - www.afdc.doe.gov

Solar energy is something that i think could be a good energy source for our growing needs. I know what many of you think about solar; like how you think that it costs too much, is not cost effective or event that it is not reliable because of clouds and the daily solar eclipses that rob most of our sunlight (that was made up). Solar cells are around 15% efficient and there is little demand for them at this time because of cheap fossil fuels, but that will change in the future. R&D in this field will mean the difference between getting rich off of the lack of oil and gas in the future or failing. The R&D that companies will conduct should greatly enhance the abilities of the solar cells (somewhere i have heard of cells that are around 40% efficient) thus making them more practical. The best thing that i can say about solar cells is that we should let the market decide what their future will be.
