Ethanol

"Ethanol is an alcohol-based alternative fuel produced by fermenting and distilling starch crops that have been converted into simple sugars. Feedstocks for this fuel include corn, barley and wheat. Ethanol can also be produced from "cellulosic biomass" such as trees and grasses and is called bioethanol. Ethanol is most commonly used to increase octane and improve the emissions quality of gasoline. In some areas of the United States, ethanol is blended with gasoline to form an E10 blend (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline), but it can be used in higher concentrations such as E85 or E95. Original equipment manufacturers produce flexible-fuel vehicles that can run on E85 or any other combination of ethanol and gasoline." - http://www.afdc.doe.gov

My understanding of this alternative- and someone correct me if I am wrong here- is that, while it does burn cleaner in a vehicle than gasoline, it also burns much faster and is therefore more expensive in the long run. More importantly, the process of "refining" it puts more pollutants into the air than does the internal combustion engine with gasoline.

UPDATE: This is the way of the future, but it is not a good way. We have more and more farmers now dumping soy bean and other crops in favor of corn- because that is where the money is. When the price of corn goes up, the price of virtually everything will go up. This will benefit ADM, not the American people.

I can see it now, Victor: The oil and agromania industries merge...even less options for We the People. If it weren't for stupid homeowner association bylaws I'd already be growing veggies in my front yard and raising livestock in the back. It may very well come to that if we can't put a stop to the insanity of the sociopathic plutocracy gorging themselves on resources and releasing none of it. Gastroenterologists might call it "constipation" but Teddy Roosevelt called it "Monopoly."
