The most disparaging of the -belts, coined in the 70s as the old industrial heartland of the US was hit by economic recession and unemployment. The label of 'Rustbelt' is understandably unpopular among those who live in these hard-hit areas. However, it remains an evocative, useful (and sadly accurate) term for the string of once proud, now struggling industrial cities stretching from Detroit to Baltimore.
