For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. Interesting because they actually finished ahead of Grandmaster Flash in last year's voting, but it was due to ballots that came in after the deadline, probably reflecting the wishes of a senior crowd that was a bit more Turtle-like in sending their votes to Cleveland.

And that's really the problem with the Hall right now, it needs a young nomination committee and younger, more knowledgeable voters, rather than old fogeys willing to throw in anyone who they own a vinyl from. The DC5 weren't awful, but they were hardly memorable or exceedingly influential. They could reasonably be listed on a Top 50 eligible artists not currently in the Hall, but they'd certainly be near the backend.
