Being that I was never particularly religious, even as a child, this was the aspect of Easter that most appealed to me. I used to love waking up Easter morning and seeing that straw basket near my bed with its synthetic pink-and-green "grass" and its cornucopia of jelly beans, marshmallow chicks or "peeps", tiny chocolate eggs filled with peanut butter or coconut, and, standing proud and tall, a stately rabbit made of solid milk chocolate with yellow sugar eyes and white sugar Bugs-Bunny teeth. That basket made having to go to church for the obligatory Easter service far less painful than it might have been otherwise.
