Canidae All Life Stages 3

My revised rating for this product is due to the formualtion changes, which unfortunately resulted in a reduction of quality. I realize that all companies need to look after their profit margins in order to stay afloat, but it doesn't mean that as a consumer I have to accept their choices. What I once considered to be a very good product at a reasonable price has become very mediocre.

Update as of 05/25/07:

I have included an update under the Solid Gold brand that affects Canidae. If interested in details, refer to it there. Canidae is indeed a very good product,  and at an affordable price,  but I hesitate giving it a 5-star rating only because there are other products that on paper at least appear slightly better.  I have indeed recommended it to friends and will continue to do so.

Original review follows:

I switched my Cocker Spaniel to this food in combination with Solid Gold (Barking at the moon) after almost 6 years on Eukanuba. We had tried switching him in the past to other, "better" foods but unfortunately all other brands seemed to upset his stomach, so we gave up trying. Recently he had to have knee surgery and we decided once more to give it a go, prompted primarily by the fact that he had become slightly overweight. The results were almost immediate surpassing our expectations! The switch was gradual over a period of 2 weeks and although he is a dog with a sensitive stomach, he never had a problem with runny or loose stool. Aside from the fact that he loves his new food, he also looks so much better!

On a somewhat separate topic, I would like to know how the overall rating is calulated. Canidae has a rating of 3.60 based on 119 reviews, yet we only see 68 of those reviews. What happened to the other 51?

Some people rate the food and submit without leaving a review. If you notice the better foods have a higher review to ratings ratio. The cheap foods like Bil-Jac and purina's have a low ratio of reviews to rating. These people can't justify their ratings so leave no reviews.

What food do you think is better than Canidae? I tried Innova Puppy and it's good in combination with Canidae but for my puppy I found it too rich on its own.

I still maintain that Canidae "All life Stages" formula is a very good dog food. If I had a puppy I would probably start him on that as well with the addition of some canned food 2-3 times per week for variety. Go to "dogfoodanalyis.com" for a very expansive canned food list rated by quality. I would hesitate to recommend a grain free kibble diet such as Orijen and Innova Evo with protein contents exceeding 35%, only because I am still not convinced that the research on high protein diets for puppies is conclusive. My own dog nutritionist seems to think that there is nothing wrong with it. You might want to consider some of the Timberwolf Organics formulas for now. Keep in mind that switching to a new dog food should be done gradually over a period of 2 weeks. Also, and again based on what the nutritionist told me, mixing dry kibble formulas (unless it is done during a switch) is not a good idea. Keeping your puppy on Canidae "All Life Stages" until he/she is at least 1 year old is not a bad idea, especially if he/she is enjoying it. When > 1 year old you may then choose to rotate the diet among different brands, Personally, the brands I have picked for my dog are Orijen, Innova Evo, Nature's Variety, and Timberwolf Organics switching among them every 2-3 months. Canidae will always be a back-up for me especially since I know he tolerates it well.

You have submitted the same review others have, as well as, the same review on other foods. Is there a reason for the lack of a personal review?

MyDog commented 908 days ago.
Dear kpusa78 - I'm not sure how much personal you would like my review to be! Afterall, I am specifically talking about my dog on Canidae...what more would you like to see?. As for this review being the same as others, if you are referring to my review about Solid Gold you are partly correct, although there is a much more extensive update about the latter. Lastly, how is my review the "same review others have"? Please do show me another review by someone else that is the same as mine...

and one more thing in response to kpusa78: if you are wondering why the original reviews to Canidae and Solid Gold are practically identical, the answer is simple: my dog was on both foods at the same time (clearly indicated in the reviews) and at the time practically impossible to attribute any effects on one or the other. Hence, there was no real need to write separate reviews in order to say the exact same thing. You will also notice that the update to Solid Gold is far more extensive than to Canidae...

as for the rest of my reviews (to Orijen and Timberwolf) although the take home message might be the same, they couldn't be any more disimilar...
