Possibly the first and only player to approach the level of playing lead on the bass. On the old program Classic Albums there was a segment where Pete Townsend lowered the level of all of the tracks on a recording except for John Entwhistle's bass. It was amazingly full, nimble playing. It sounded like two guys playing a duet. He also did the same thing for Keith Moon's drumming, it sounded like a car crash. A very rhythmic and extended car crash of course.
