Linux 4

It's stable, and it works well if for research purposes. However I would never use Linux on my personal machine, because it's very slow to support things like Java and Flash which are all over the place any more. And there just isn't the software available for it.  For programming, it's great. For entertainment purposes, I hate to say this, but go with Windows.

I have no clue what people are talking about. WOW look I can use java and it's faster on linux! and flash OMG look at that it WORKS! SO STABLE look a PDF file in seconds... omg only 10 process running.. about 10% memory being used and omg look I can get all the same things on linux as I can get on windows, and if you think Vista has a sweet interface, look up beryl for linux.. ha bow down to linux

Yeah, Java and Flash work just fine for 32 bit linux, but it's not necessarily supported by all 64 bit installations. Linux is great, and for work related purposes it far surpasses Windows. But unfortunately, it still lags far behind Windows in the entertainment department, both in the support of things like Java and Flash, as well as in gaming software. A Mac might be a reasonable compromise, as long as you're willing to wait a year for the stuff that everyone who has Windows gets.
