Count Five- Psychotic Reaction

Flick01

I give this song a high rating as it was one of the great grand-daddies of the psychedelic genre. It was one of the first songs to use non instrumental sounds as part of the song. (Not counting sound effects such as the car crash in "Leader Of The Pack") The sound used by the Count Five was simple, low tech and crude by almost any standard. The guitarist blocked the strings with one hand and strummed with the other, something every young guitarist has done at some time, usually when just fooling around. But back in that time it was a first and was as cutting edge as the Beatles who, during the same time period, had used feedback in the intro to their song "I Feel Fine." I was a young teenager when Psychotic Reaction was released and I clearly remember how it caught everyone's attention and was one of the early inspirations for others who later would follow. Though dated and amusing by today's standards, it was one of the early doors which opened for musicians and gave them the green light to think and play outside the box.

Jeff Beck got his sound by double-amping. He took a small slave amp...used a razor blade to cut holes in the speaker cone...then played it through a microphone to his main amplifier. BTW, they also sounded a lot like The Standells.

Flick: Your reviews are always great...no problem.

Thank you Autzen. Perhaps I should clarify as I agree with you. It was a psychedelic sounding song about women. I didn't mean to imply it was about drugs or tripping on LSD, as apparently other have.

yeah, or their version of "I'm A Man"

Thank you Osacr and yes, I agree. I believe there is an almost identical sound to the guitar in Psychotic Reaction and the Yardbird's "Heart Full Of Soul."

The "chicken-scratch" was used by Clapton in his Yardbird phase. I agree with most of the review Flick, except that it most certainly WAS NOT a psychedelic song...it was about women.

Good review, Flick. I've always felt that there was a big Yardbirds influence on this one.
