Improving Our Schools

CanadaSucks

Money will never, ever solve one single problem in schools until American parents stop making excuses for their overweight and pampered kids who cannot compete (in terms of science and math) with most other industrialized nations. . .check out the makeup of grad students in the science, math, and technology wings at your local top-30 graduate school and count the foreign students- the home-grown talent is sparse, kids, and it will really hurt us unless we start making our kids study and stop blaming those oh-so-bad teachers who are forced to dumb-down curriculum because teachers are systematically forced to pass almost everyone. . .you reap what you sow. . .

Just a point on the success rates of foriegn students in the domestic education system, don't you think that the sample is skewed? I think only the well off students with identified high potential are eligable and receive financial support from their families. If you took a sample of American children of highly paid professional workers who are working overseas, then they would probably fair better than the general local population.

. . .domestic math and science positions aren't filled by home-grown talent because of the dearth of home-grown talent in these fields. . .we were once dominant in technology but sliding fast- it's the true danger to our nation. . .studying, learning, and being smart isn't cool in our contemporary culture. . .

It also doesn't help that a good number of jobs that awaited math, science, engineering and physics whizzes are outsourced overseas. Where do American kids apply their degrees if employers move operations beyond U.S. borders? [Yeah, I guess they could work overseas, but it somehow defeats the purpose.]
