John Wooden

John Wooden is one of only two people elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player(1961) and coach(1973). John Wooden coached Indiana State(1946-48) before becoming head coach at UCLA where his greatest success was achieved. His career coaching record is 667-161(.806). His resume includes 4 seasons with teams that finished 30-0 and 7 straight national championships(1966-73). His UCLA teams won 10 national championships in all. At Pauley Pavilion his teams were an outstanding 149-2(.987).

Probably not as great as Dean Smith (if you evaluate the circumstances of both their careers, you'll understand), but definitely one of the greats. Where was the personality though? Even in his playing career he seemed wooden.
