Famous scene and properly so. One of the great surprise sequences in movie-making, killing off the star mid-picture.
This is such a fine film it would be easy to pick several moments, the killing of the detective, the discovery of mother, the disposal of the car, the symbology of the color of underwear, and the psychologists dialogue.
My feeling is that this is Hitchcock's second best film, with only the near flawless "Vertigo" in front of it.
