Depth, depth, and more depth. Ruth was a terrific left handed pitcher. Smokey Joe Wood, at his peak was terrific, and might have gone on to be an all- time great one had he not got hurt. Carl Mays was frankly an asshole, but a hell of a good pitcher who is better than some guys in the Hall. Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock really made their mark with the Yankees, and weren't as good in their careers in New York as Carl Mays or Urban Shocker were in theirs, and aren't exactly the first names you'd think of when the term HOF'er comes up, but very good anyway. Ernie Shore and Rube Foster had decent to good career, and Dutch Leonard, Sad Sam Jones, and Bullet Joe Bush were all above average hurlers. Other guys contributed to the team's success like Ray Collins, Hugh Bedient, Charley Hall, and Buck O'Brien...Loads of talent, one of these teams, I think the 1918 one, had something like 1050 total wins in their careers. Great staff.
