I recently took a trip to Anchorage Alaska. I reserved from FOX because the rental location is not physically at the airport therefore I would not have to pay the high airport tax, as advertised. Also it was advertised that a shuttle service to and from the airport would be provided. So upon landing at ANC I called to arrange for the shuttle. I was told they would arrive within 15 minutes. My actual wait time was one and a half hours. Once picked up by the shuttle service I discovered that the location of the rental office is less than 4 miles from the airport. I could have literally walked to the rental place in less time. Upon arriving I was shocked when I received my bill and it did include the airport tax. I was told this was because I used the shuttle service. Had I rented a taxi the charge would not have been applied. If this is in fact true I feel it should have been disclosed. Also it would have been nice to know this before waiting one and a half hours at the airport. I would also like to point out that with the additional tax I could have rented more cheaply from the airport. All of this I could have lived with as things do happen however, when the car was brought around I was again shocked to see that it was an old Ford Taurus. This model has not been made for years. The car had peeling paint, more dents then I can enumerate, and part of the bummer was ripped off. When I was going over the pre-rental inspection and the employee was marking down the things I reported he actually said "I guess it would be easier to say what isn't wrong with the car." (Um, WOW) I think it should be mandatory to disclose that you are actually renting a wreck. Also, I asked for a non-smoking car. When I sat in the car the smell of smoke was worse then if I had walked into a pub. The seats were actually filled with burn holes. As if to cover up the smell a pine tree air freshener had been hung from the rear-view mirror. When I asked about the smoke smell the employee offered to spray the car with generic febreeze. However the squirt handle was broken. Had it not been so unbelievable it would have been humorous. I find myself wondering if all rental locations are similar to this one.
While I was there some fisherman came in to pick up their car. It had a crack in the windshield from one side to the other. In my state this car would not have been road legal. At this point I came to the conclusion that this is not a legitimate business but rather con artists and I had just been had.
