My friends tend to be atheists, but in the one church wedding I've attended, the Baptist officiant began the service with a 20-minute tirade about how he would only officiate at straight weddings, as if gays and lesbians were lining up outside to ask him for his blessing. He offered a long disquisition about how gays and lesbians were taking over the country, I suppose even in the depths of rural Tennessee, where we were. He repeated the phrase "one man and one woman" so often that I was beginning to wonder whether he needed to reaffirm his sexuality for us.
There was only one sentence about the particular man and woman standing in front of him. On their behalf, I felt cheated.
Oh, and he advised the bride (who was a doctor of medicine) that she was about to embark on a life of "faithfulness and obedience." I haven't actually heard from her since.
